CommBox Edge Core Quick Start Guide
A Comprehensive Guide to the CommBox Edge Core: Setup, Configuration, and Network Management
The CommBox™ Edge Core is a highly adaptable networking and routing device designed to seamlessly manage multiple Internet connections and local networks. Whether you are setting it up for standard land-based use or deploying it on a maritime vessel, understanding its core features and configuration pathways is essential for maximizing your network’s efficiency.
Here is an in-depth breakdown of the device’s installation, default capabilities, and advanced network configurations based on the official Quick Start Guide.
Unboxing and Physical Installation
When unboxing the Edge Core, the kit includes the primary router, an AC-DC power supply with international adapter plugs, VELCRO® hook-and-loop tape, and a standard Ethernet cable.
When deciding where to install the device, prioritize a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. You can secure the router to a flat surface using the provided heavy-duty VELCRO® tape or mount it to a wall using the built-in keyholes on the bottom of the unit.
Powering the Device: The device utilizes a 12 VDC (50W max) power supply connected to a standard 100-240 VAC outlet. Crucially, if your AC power is unstable—and strictly if you are installing the Edge Core on a vessel—an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is required. Upon plugging the device in, a status light will blink blue during initialization and turn solid white when the system is fully booted and ready for use.
Default Network Operations
By default, the Edge Core comes pre-configured to handle modern dual-connection setups right out of the box. The device features six Ethernet ports, natively assigned as follows:
- Primary WAN (Port 1): Configured as a 2.5G connection meant for Starlink.
- Secondary WAN/LAN (Port 2): Configured as a 2.5G connection meant for Cellular networks.
- LAN (Ports 3-6): Four 1G ports dedicated to your local user network.
In this default state, the Edge Core intelligently prioritizes the Starlink connection and uses the cellular connection as an automatic failover backup. Local wireless connectivity is also provided immediately via built-in 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands.
Customizing Your Network Setup
One of the most powerful aspects of the Edge Core is its flexibility. All six of its Ethernet ports are fully configurable to act as either WAN (Internet in) or LAN (Network out) interfaces.
This allows network administrators to create highly tailored architectures. For example, you could configure five of the ports to accept different Internet sources—such as Starlink, OneWeb, VSAT, and cellular—while dedicating a single port to the local network. Furthermore, the device supports advanced routing capabilities, including connection bonding, which allows you to merge multiple WAN connections (like dual Starlink antennas) to optimize total network speed and bandwidth.
Device Registration and Extended Functionality
To get the most out of your Edge Core, free registration with KVH is required. By providing the Device ID (DID) printed on the unit and an administrator email address to support@globalsatellite.us, you gain access to the CommBox Edge Cloud Portal.
Registering the device allows you to activate extended software licenses that unlock premium capabilities, including:
- Comprehensive monitoring of network performance.
- Secure remote access to the router and connected LAN/WAN devices.
- Configurable WAN data quotas to manage bandwidth costs.
- A crew captive portal and specific user data allocations, which is highly beneficial for enterprise or marine fleet management.
Additionally, if you need to expand your Wi-Fi footprint, you can purchase an Access Point License. This allows a secondary Edge Core device to act purely as a wireless access point tied to your primary router.
Management Interfaces: Remote vs. Local
You can configure the Edge Core using two different interfaces depending on your physical proximity to the device and your registration status:
1. Remote Configuration (Preferred): Through the CommBox Edge Cloud Portal, network administrators can completely manage the router from anywhere in the world. If you make changes while the device is offline, the cloud will save your settings and automatically push them to the Edge Core the moment it connects to the Internet via a DHCP-enabled WAN source. Note that if you are using an Edge Core strictly as a secondary Wi-Fi access point, it must be configured remotely via this cloud portal.
2. Local Configuration (OpenEdge Interface): If the device is unregistered or offline, you can configure it locally. By plugging a laptop directly into the “LAN 2” port, you can access the local OpenEdge dashboard via a web browser at the IP address 192.168.235.1. The default credentials for this local access are edge for both the username and password. It is highly recommended that you navigate to “Manage Accounts” and change this default password immediately to secure your network from unauthorized access.
